Mindful Jewel Practice

Mindfulness for ChildrenBreathing meditation can really help children to relax, but how to practically introduce it ?

When we start to practice this meditation it can be a little difficult to locate and focus on the breath.

We perhaps try a little to hard to focus.

Almost as though we need to make ourself breathe instead of just allowing the breath to take place naturally.

That is why we are going to engage in the practice known as the Mindful Jewel Exercise.

For this we simply rest down on the floor and try to find a small stone that we can place on our stomach.

If you’re going to guide your child or class through this practice, you can make an exercise where you go outside and look for a nice stone to use. You can encourage the children to use their imagine. Even believing that the stone is a magical jewel that has the power to help them relax and feel very calm.

So we are going to try and become aware of the rising and falling of the stone on our stomach.

Our stomach naturally rises and falls as we breathe.

Instead of focussing on our breath we try to simply focus on the stone.

This practice can be very effective in helping us to focus. Its also a very good way to introduce children to a breathing exercise.

Another way you can practice this meditation is to simply rest your hands on your stomach and watch them rise up and down as you breathe.  This can be very effective in helping us fall asleep.

Below there are two meditations that we can practice one for adults and one for children.

Both are quite short in length – feel free to extend them if you wish to have a longer session.

If you have children or work with children then consider introducing them to this practice when you have gained a little experience.

You can use and listen to these practices to begin with.  Be creative, you may wish to have a longer or shorter session.  Once you have confidence with the practice then you will feel confident to help others practice.
